How to Flip Our Thinking in HealthcareĪ few years ago, I read a New York Times article about a teacher who turned education upside down by “flipping” his classroom. We need new solutions and new ways of thinking if we want to be successful. We also need to unleash patient’s power if we truly want to transform healthcare. We need to move to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Triple Aim Initiative of better care for individuals, better health for populations, and lower per capita costs. The IHI Triple Aim logo may not be used by other entities or individuals unless IHI has granted permission (request permission at If IHI grants permission, please use this logo file that is black with a white background.Across the world, we’re facing significant financial constraints in healthcare, an aging population, and the increasing burden of chronic disease.Do not include a box or other shape around the logo. The logo is all one color and may appear as all black or all white when dropped out of a dark background. The logo must always appear intact and pieces of the logo may not be used alone. The IHI Triple Aim logo consists of a triangle above a type treatment for the words “IHI Triple Aim.” No other versions of the logo exist (e.g., no horizontal version).Use of the terms “Triple Aim,” “IHI Triple Aim,” or “IHI Triple Aim Initiative” must not imply that IHI has approved, reviewed, or certified that any entity or collection of entities is working toward, is close to achieving, or has achieved the “IHI Triple Aim” unless IHI has granted permission (request permission at you have questions about using any of these terms, please contact I need permission to use the graphics?.Use of the terms “Triple Aim,” “IHI Triple Aim,” or “IHI Triple Aim Initiative” must not imply that IHI has endorsed any for-profit entity or product, as laid out in the Principles for Accepting Commercial Support. When an individual or entity uses the term “Triple Aim,” IHI requests (but does not require) that they note that “The Triple Aim framework was developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Cambridge, Massachusetts (.Any individual or entity is encouraged to use the terms “Triple Aim,” “IHI Triple Aim,” or “IHI Triple Aim Initiative,” as defined above.(Slowing the rate of increase in per capita cost is not bold enough rather, the Triple Aim pursues actual reduction of per capita cost.) The simultaneous pursuit of improving patient satisfaction, improving health of populations, and slowing the rate of increase in per capita cost.(Does not include health of populations.) The simultaneous pursuit of improving patient satisfaction, improving quality, and reducing per capita cost. The simultaneous pursuit of improving patient satisfaction, improving health of populations, and reducing per capita cost (Note: Most misinterpretation occurs with this dimension! Patient experience MUST include quality AND satisfaction.).In 2012, the effort continues and has involved more than 100 organizations to date from the US, Canada, England, Scotland, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. IHI TRIPLE AIM INITIATIVE. “ IHI Triple Aim Initiative” refers to the IHI’s multi-year effort to test the framework known as the “IHI Triple Aim.” The effort began in 2007 with a group of 15 organizations in the US, England, and Sweden that focused on implementing the Triple Aim.IHI TRIPLE AIM. The “ IHI Triple Aim” framework was developed in 2007 by IHI in a series of 90-day R&D projects, IHI's method for quickly researching innovative ideas and assessing their potential for advancing quality improvement. Note that IHI prefers that the term “ framework” be used to describe the IHI Triple Aim, as opposed to “model” or “concept.”.Note that the Triple Aim is a single aim with three dimensions.
